Give hand tool safety a hand

What’s the difference between a true craftsperson and an amateur? The craftsperson uses tools correctly. The amateur makes even simple jobs hazardous by not using the correct tools. For example, trying to make a screwdriver do a chisel’s job is unprofessional, unsafe, and uncalled for.

Hand tool mishaps are responsible for about 1 out of every 12 workplace injuries, including cuts and bruises, punctures, fractures, and even loss of a finger or an eye. That’s a surprising figure considering that most people think of powered tools as the dangerous tools and hand tools as pretty safe. And, of course, they are safe—if they’re handled properly. The problem is that too often people mishandle them.
